A new Halogen Resistant Azole (HRA) has been developed for protection of copper alloys in aqueous solutions. This material provides excellent copper corrosion inhibition in the presence of halogen-based oxidizing biocides and offers better protection at reduced feedrates than the industry standard Tolyltriazole (TTA). Unlike TTA, this unique material does not react with oxidizing biocides such as chlorine and bromine which helps reduce the demand on these materials and can lower their use levels. In addition to decreasing the amount of oxidizing biocide necessary to maintain good microbiological control, the use of HRA also eliminates the annoying odor that is often encountered in chlorinated, TTA-treated systems. The results of field trials at several industrial sites are presented.
