Quality and operational benefits of continuous tundish temperature measurement at british steel teesside works

The Continuous Casting Plant at British Steel's Teesside Works produces 3.5 million tonnes of semis per year from three casting machines, two twin strand slab casters and an eight strand bloom caster. Historically tundish temperature easurement has been by the Heraeus Electro-Nite Positherm immersion 'dip' system (temperatures being taken every 5 - 10 minutes). Following extensive trials these casters have recently been converted to continuous tundish temperature measurement with dramatic improvements in safety, operations and quality of the steel cast.
