The use of piezoelectric element to eject ink droplets was successfully demonstrated 50 years ago. The concept of this ink jet printing technology is simple. In fact, most of the fundamentals underlying the operation of the device were understood even longer before that. However, it took huge international development efforts in the last 30 years to effectively implement this simple concept. The commercial successes of the piezoelectric ink jet technology have finally come in the last few years after breakthroughs in reliability and cost have been realized.
