Spectral hole-burning at low temperature provides an extremely wavelength selective photocemistry and opened up new prospects for high desity data storage. Hole burning active rcording materials allow for wavelenght multiplexed hologram storage. The multiplexing factor depends on the ratio of inhomogeneous to homogeneous linewidth of the chromophor which typically is on the order of 10,000 at 2K. In a recent experiment as much as 12,000 images have been stored within the inhomogeneous band of a chromophore in a polymer host. In addition by manipulating the hologram phase as a function of the wavelength, holograms with fascinating diffraction properties can be created. Besides high diffraction efficiency and excellent read out stability even direct optical processing of stored images can be achieved.
