In order to verify the effectiveness of strengthening techniques for reinforced concrete columns, five of 1/2-scale models of the columns and two of the actual columns cut out of an old reinforced concrete building, both strengthened by carbon fiber blanket, were tested. The tests of the 1/2-scale model showed that the originally poorly reinforced concrete columns, even with side walls, were significantly improved in shear ductility by wrapping with carbon fiber blankets. The tests of the actual columns showed that strengthening by carbon fiber blanket improved the shear strength without any change in initial stiffness. It was also found that the increase of shear strength can be estimated by regarding the carbon fiber blanket as shear reinforcement.
