A boundary element program for the study of vibration propagation in the ground

The study of vibration propagation in buildings excited by their foundations can be separated in two parts: the behaviour of the structure for a known excitation and the quantification of the excitation itself, either in the form of an input power or of an imposed level of vibration. SEA has been used with success for the first part of the problem [1]. In the case of buried buildings the influence of the ground on embedded plates requires a knowledge of both the wave celerities and the increase of losses. Additional models are therefore required. Simple approaches [2] for infinite layered systems can give rapid information for main tendencies. In order to introduce more complex geometries we developed a 2D boundary element program. Size effects as well as power or velocity input to a structure can be estimated for many problems and for the full frequency range of interest.
