Video telephony is a particularly challenging application. It combines communications algorithms, audio and video processing all of which must be processed in real-time.In order to bring video conferencing into the mainstream the right mix of standards, technology, cost and quality should be achieved. The first step in achieving this mix lies in the H.324 standards - a scheme set forth by the ITU for video conferencing over ordinary POTS.The second step lies in the implementation - hardware or software.Although H.324 is often implemented with fixed-function chips, the high implemented with fixed-function chips, the high performance of current processors allows efficient implementation of the standards in software. In this paper,we will describe a software implementation approach of the H.324 standard on TI's TMS320C80,a multiprocessor DSP with a highly parallelized instruction set.
