Ventilation requirements after dust criteria in fully mechanized longwall districts in Valea Jiului coal basin, Romania

The restructuring of mining activities inValea Jiului coal basin, imposed by the transition tothe market economy and the requirements of the recentlyadopted environmental law by the romanian government,calls for an increased coal output which is to be mainlyobtained from fully mechanized longwall districts.Obviously, it becomes a major problem which has not beensolved yet in Romania: assessment of ventilationrequirements for maintaining the dust concentrationsunder the prescribed legal levels. The paper presentsthe results of experimental and field measurementscarried out in a few collieries in the main coal basinfrom Romania, which were focused on this issue. Dustlevels were measured for several different conditionsand a statistical data processing allowed us to obtainthe optimal field of air velocities from dustconcentration viewpoint. The results of these analysesand research will be used in selection of miningmachines in correlation with their operating conditions and environment.
