Excavated iznik kilns and characterization studies of the kiln furniture

The term Izink ceramics refers to the pottery andtiles produced in the town of Iznik, Turkey during the reign ofOttoman Empire, in the period between 14th through 17thcenturies. Those ceramics have been classified into differentgroups, such as; "Miletus", "Abraham of Kütahya", "GoldenHorn" and "Damascus" wares based on their style but notindicating a provenance. Although, on the basis of its productiontechnology, Iznik ceramics represents the general Islamicceramic tradition, the tznik potters succeeded in producingceramics of a very high quality characterized by a wide range ofvivid colors under a brilliant lead-soda glaze during 16thcentury. It was generally thought that such quality wares couldnot be produced by Ottoman craftsmen and they were attributedto Iran, Rhodes, Damascus, Kütahya and Golden Horn of Istanbul.
