Site Selection for Marine Aqueaculture in Northern Coastal Zone of Sao Paulo State, Brazil

The noth coastal zone of Sao Paulo State is comprised between the latitudes of 23deg 25' S and 23deg 45' S, incuding the cities of Ubatuba, Caraguatatuba, Sao Sebastiao and Ilha Bela. It presents a great diversity of coastal environments that need to be sustained through adequate knoweldge and management. It contains marine ecosystems like mangroves, rock and sand beaches; beside continental ecosysems like tropical forest and rivers. Pollution, predatory fishery and absence of ecological management have contributed to the decrease of fishery stocks and local productivity. It is likely that the installation of small marine farms for shellfish, fishes, crabs and marine algae production, will be the solution fo rsustinable fishery development. The objective of this study is no establish a strategy to select siteis for marine production park. Maps of the main ecosystems and localization of domestic pulmes efflux were obtaiend using Landsat TM images.
