Recent emphasis on coastal zone management in Europe has highlighted a need for biological resolurce maps. Electromegnetic remote sensing techniqes for marine benthic resource mapping are limited in temperature waters by high concentrations of suspended matter. Sonar penetrates turbid water and enables us to visualise the seabed. Analysis of data from acoustic ground discrimination systems and from biologial survey within a GIS environment can produce maps of marine benthic resources. The use of these maps by the UK Gorernment Conservation Agencies is discussed.
