Applications of laser induced fluorescence and image processing in observing plume behaviour

A description of laser-induced fluorescence and image processing systems developed, at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, for observing the mean and temporal behaviour of jets and plumes is given. Difficulties associated with obtaining quantitative informaiton from images are discussed. Included are examples of applications of the system in quantifying the mean and temporal behaviour of still and weakly advected jets. Finally an outline is given of future plans to modify and improve the systems.
