The present work deals with the mechanicalbehaviour of a commercial AS9U3/SiCp composite formed bysand and permanent mold casting. The correspondingunreinforced matrix was also formed in the same conditions. Ascast and heat treated (T6) tensile test specimens were machinedand tested at room and 300 deg temperatures. The resultsshowed a finer microstructure for both materials formed bypermanent mold casting, with improved properties for thecomposite over those obtained for the unreinforced matrix,although this improvement was more clearly shown at 300 deg.The highest mechanical properties were obtained with the T6heat treatment for both materials formed by permanent mold casting.
