Deep, cold ocean water has been recognized and developed as an important resource for use in Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), aquaculture, desalinization, refrigeratio and air conditioning. These programs require access to deep water through intake cold water pipelines. The ability to reliably and cost effectivley install a deep water pipeline has bene an active area of design and research, particularly in the Sature of Hawaii, where the development of the cold water resource is underway.
