A numerical study exploring the two-dimensional heat transfer between a fumed cylinder with an unsteady temperature boundary condition and the surrounding semi-infinite ground is described. Geometric parameters include fin length, width and spacing and material properties include the thermal diffusivities of the fins and the soil and the ratio of fin and soil thermal conductivities. The quasi-steady dimensionless heat transfer can be well represented by a sine wave. For all cases except those with fin length approaching zero, the heat transfer from the cylinder surface is negligible. The heat transfer increases linearly with fin length, while the effect of fin thickness is negligible. The heat transfer increases with increasing number of fins from zero to ten. Further increases in the number of fins results in very little increase in the heat transfer. An empirical correlation is presented for the quasi-steady heat transfer results.
