The south marginal Altay district in China is located in a belt elongated eastly from the Altay metallogenic belt in Kazakhstan. Previous geologists explored the geotectonic evolution in the district in terms of plate tectonics. However, there are two different kinds of geotectonic viewpoints on the district, that is, to the south margin of the Siberian plate and to the north margin of the Junggar plate. At present, most of geologists agree with the first knowledge, and Jiang et al. (1992) clearly demonstrated the geotectonic environment of the district and pointed out that its tectonic system belonged to the extensional continental rift basin or to island arc-basin on active continental margin. This article will primarily discuss the relationship between the Palaeozoic crustal accretion evolution and metallogenic zoning in the district.
