toxicology studies with a high-boiling lubricating oil (esstic 46 CF) used in a hydroelectric generating station

A spill of a used lubricating oil into the Winnipeg River from the Manitoba Hydro generating station at Great Falls,manitoba,prometed an investigation into the toxicity of the oil to fish.Examination of the oil by gas-chromatography/mass spetrometry revealed a tyupical oil-like profile with alkane peaks in the C-20 to C-30 range and a prominent 'unresolved ocmplex mixture'.An attempt was made to produce a 'water -soluble fraction' by stirring vibgorously a mxture of oil and water and then allowing hte layers to separate to yield a water layer ocntianing the msot readily soluble hydrocarbons but the water layer contianed ino measureable quantities of hydrocarbons.
