No changes have been made for many years in the ASME Section VIII Boiler and Pressure Vessel code for etermining the allowable compressive stresses for cylindrical,conical and spherical shells.Many test programs have been conducted since the design rules in the current ASME Code (ASME 1995a) were formulated.A comprehensive analysis of all test data related to stabvility of cylindrical shells was made by Miller and Saiklis (1993,1995) and equations were recommended for determining the failure stresses under various loads and load combinations.Similar unpublished studies have been made by the authors on spherical shells and formed heads.
