Environmental pollution, especially the toxicity of chlorine-containing bleachery effuents in the pulp industry is being paid more and more attention. The harm-fulness of bleachery effluents results from chlorinated organics, such as chlorinated phenolic compounds and their degradation products. The distribution and biodegrad-ability of chlorinated phenolic compounds in bleachery effluents were studied. Reed kraft pulp bleaching effluents from CEH sequence were treated with immobilized white-rot fungus P. chrysosporium, and the chlorinated phenolic compunds in the effluents were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). It was shown that chlorophenols and chloroguaiacols existed in the chlorination and alkaline extraction stage effluents, and no chlorinated phenolic compounds were found in the hypochlorite stage effluent. After the CEH bleaching effluents were treated with the immobilized white-rot fungus P. chrysosporium, most of the chlorinated phenolic compounds were removed.
