The role of bamboo, a non-wood plant raw material, in pulp and papermaking is well established in South East Asian countries. However, in view of growing environmental concern, bamboo pulp is being accepted in many countries in other continents. Bamboo has edge over other woody raw materials but required further improvements in process of manufacture of pulp from environmental and quality point of view. PHOENIX is a pioneer mill to manufacture non-wood market pulps of kenaf and bamboo and has been putting sustained efforts to establish these pulps in different parts of the world for manufacture of quality papers. The mill has started its second line which incorporates most advanced concepts at different stages of process including state-of-the-art SuperBatch pulping process, Oxygen Delignification and followed by Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) bleaching sequence. The present paper briefly discusses the systems and process details while manufacturing bamboo pulp. The operational experiance and various data show that bamboo could be processed quite efficiently with the desired benefites including the energy economy, lov/er bleaching chemicals consumption and lower pollution loads with improved pulp quality. ECF bamboo pulp could be established for manufacture of acceptable quality of different grades of papers. The Environmental impacts of pulp and paper industry remained under constant scrutiny from different agencies, as it has been considered as high environmental impact mill The constant efforts are being made by the industry to reduce such impacts and to make total process and products more Environmentally Friendly. For achieving such targets the special stress has been given for selection and utilization of raw material and reduction of pollution loads from the bleach plant area which contribute maximum. The identification and use of raw materials which are available on sustainable basis without adversely affecting the ecology have become the important points for consideration The non-wood plant fibers considered best to meet these requirements. Straws, bamboo, kenaf and hemp are the main sources of non-wood plant fibers which have been considered most suitable for pulp and papermaking.
