The effect of alkali ratio on AS-AQ reed pulping is investigated. Experimental result shows that the alkali ratio of 0. 2 gives the best reaction activity for delignification under defined conditions (i.e. chemicals charge 16% Na_2O,liquor ratio 1: 6,max. temperature 165°C, time at max temperature 120 min). The obtained pulp has a low KMnO_4 No. of 6. 41 ,and an average degree of polymerization of 1983. Pulp yield is claimed to be around 51. 43% and the pulp can be readily bleached with 1. 38% available chlorine to a brightness of 70% (SBD).
