Alternative fluorocarbons which do not destroy the ozone layer have been substituted for chlorofluorocarbons in diverse fields. Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC12) in use for refrigerators is to be totally banned in 1995, which was decided by the Conference of the Montreal Protocol Member Countries. At present, HFC134a equipped with zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) is taking over from CFC12. Magnet wires used for the compressor motor of a refrigerator are mainly of a polyamide overcoated polyester type in Japan. It was found that the wires lose their original durability when used with this alternative fluorocarbon. Accordingly, a change in the materials used was considered, Also we have striven to develop magnet wires suitable for this purpose. The self-lubricating magnet wire which we have developed this time has sufficient durability as a winding wire for the compressor of a refrigerator that uses the alternative fluorocarbon. In addition, the magnet wires exhibit an excellent windability in the coil-winding process. This paper deals with the development process of the new magnet wire.
