The transmission limitations for high bit rate amplified systems due to a nonlinear effect known as Modulation Instability (MI) are presented. Experimental results for a 20Gbit/s 560km amplified system show a decrease in Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of 8.5dB when operated 5nm into the anomalous, compared to 5nm into the normal, dispersion regime.
