Oxy-fuel firing has been implemented in a number of furnaces throughout the glass industry during the past few years. The primary benefits of oxy-fuel conversions include lower energy consumption, reduction of NOx and particulate emissions, avoidance of capital and expense funds for refractories and refractory construction costs, and the reduction of costs related to the disposal of spent refractories contaminated with hazardous elements and compounds. However, in spite of all of the aforementioned benefits, there have been some compromises noted in refractory performance and refractory life. This paper will review several refractory use experiences encountered in glass contact and in superstructure service. Borosilicate and alkali-barium silicate glass applications will be presented.
