Toughened glass insulators are of great importance for the high voltage transmission lines wherein they act as the conductor supporting and insulating elements. Their performances and reliability are related closely to the safe service of the power supply system As the substituents for the porcelain products of the same kind, toughened glass insulators have a lot of superior advantages and have been popularised world-wide. It has been reported that among the overhead transmission lines all the world, glass insulators hold 60 % share in comparison with other kinds of insulators. Especially in the DC lines, the share of glass insulators as high as 80% have been reached. In present paper, authors related the performances and reliability of toughened glass insulators starting from the analysis on properties of toughened glasses, and covering the practices of production, tests and services of toughened glass insulators.
