ILC Dover has developed and manufactured a Rapid Heating Test Fixture that can quickly simulate the expected heating environment that the Supersonic Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator, Robotic-class program (SIAD-R) will see in operational flight conditions. The test fixture was developed to characterize the Silicone Coated Kevlar~?29 fabric and seamed configurations selected for use on SIAD-R in a representative heating environment, as there was no testing previously published that would demonstrate the capability of the textile materials above 212°C. The rapid heating test fixture was designed to reach an elevated isothermal condition within seconds of exposure that was representative of the planned flight-like heating environment. As the program progressed, thermal models were refined and the final operational high temperature prediction was reduced from 330°C to 290°C. This report details the testing program developed for the SIAD-R and provides new information on the mechanical performance of the Silicone Coated Kevlar~?29 at high temperatures. Results of the various evaluations performed are provided and include modulus analysis, multiple uni-axial tensile evaluations, handling flex and creasing, permeation, and ply adhesion.
