To introduce new digital services, such as digital broadcasting services and digital video-on-demand (VOD), into the demand-access optical CATV system without major changes in the system architecture, we discuss the transmission of a 16QAM signal which can carry about 80 Mbps with just about the same transmission bandwidth as an FM signal. This paper describes the system configuration of the demand-access CATV system for a 16QAM/FM hybrid transmission. Experimental results on prototype equipment are also presented.
