PLANNING PARAMETERS FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF ADVANCED TELEVISION (ATV)

The introduction of digital television in North America implies a transition period, in which both digital Advanced Television (ATV) and analog National Television System Committee (NTSC) services will be available to home users. During that period of simulcasting, the objectives are to provide one ATV channel for every existing NTSC station, provide an ATV coverage area comparable to that of NTSC while minimizing the interference to existing NTSC services. Protection of existing NTSC services is an important requirement and a significant constraint on ATV services. These objectives imply trade-offs; satisfying one may mean compromising another. The challenge is to maximize the services during the simulcasting period.
