We present a systematic theory for the optimum subband decimation and interpolation using a given analysis or synthesis filter bank. Set of signals treated in this paper is a family of n-dimensional signals which are not necessarily band-limited. Applying the presented optimum approximation itera-tively, we can derive the optimum cosine modulated FIR filter banks. Based on this cosine modulated filter bank, a favorable linear phase FIR filter bank is easily obtained by using the new design method called cosine-sine modulation. Several discussions are given with respect to the proposed M channel linear-phase FIR filter bank in the fields of the image processing and video. In particular, a simple 2-dimensional filter bank consist of separable 4 channel filter banks with the decimator operated on the horizontal, vertical and hexagonal sample points is proposed relating to the decimation and interpolation in the video signal processing.
