Effect of Implanted Y on High Temperature Oxidation of Fe-20Cr-4Al Alloy

Effect of implanted Y on high temperature oxidation behavior of Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy was studied at 1573K for 18.0ks in O_2 by mass change measurements. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy was implanted in a TANDETORON implanter using 1 MeV Y beam to dose of 10~(15) ions/ cm~2. The mass change of the Y-implanted Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy increased compared with that of Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy. The result suggested that spalling of the oxide on the Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy occurred over the entire surface during cooling. The mass gain of the Y-implanted Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy also increased compared with that of the Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy containing the amount of spalled oxides. On the other hand, the oxide on the Y-implanted Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy showed good adherence. The oxides on these alloys were α-Al_2O_3. The oxide on the Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy had a convoluted morphology, and many microvoids were observed into the oxide. The convoluted oxide might have lead to the spalling of the oxide. The oxide on the Y-implanted Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy also had a convoluted Morphology, however, the size of microvoids of the oxide on the Y-implanted Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy was smaller than that of the Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy. The result suggested that Y implantation to Fe-20Cr-4Al alloy altered plasticity or fracture toughness of α-Al_2O_3 scale on the alloy.
