Segmentation is one of the most important image processing steps toward pattern recognition and image understanding and a significant step toward image compression and coding. In this papers,s a fuzzy technique is presented that resolves several difficult issues related to image segmentation. The largest area of an image can be easily segmented and the association of most of the pixels to different segments determined from the edge information. It is, however, the pixels between segments and in high frequency areas whose relationship to adjacent segments is not so clear. These pixels can belong to the matte, highlight, or shadow area of the closest segment, or in association with neighboring pixels make up a smaller segment. the dichromatic reflection model is used to merge highlight and shadow areas with the matte ones. The approximate or fuzzy reasoning approach proposed here provides a more humanlike segmentation of images.
