Fiber optical high capacity data transmission has almost exclusively been investigated in the third optical window (around 1550 nm) due to the excellent features of Erbium-doped amplifiers (EDFAs). Recently 1.3μm optical amplifiers have been improved significantly. Therefore the second optical window has become a realistic alternative for practical all-optical systems. In this article, it is shown that 1.3μm pulse propagation on standard monomode fibers (SMF) has several advantages as compared to the 1.55μm-case in view of the dispersion problem. Various transmission techniques are analysed, including external modulation in NRZ format and compensating fibers. The feasibility of soliton propagation at 1.3μm wavelength for high capacity data transmission on SMF-based links is illustrated. 10 Gbit/s data rate over several thousands of kilometers and 20 Gbif s over several hundreds of kilometers can be achieved.
