Completion of existing CATV networks for providing new services

About 50 million european households are receiving television and radio signals over broadband CATV networks in frequency ranges between 47 to 300 Mhz, 47 to 450 Mhz, 47 to 606 Mhz and 47 to 862 Mhz. The main function of these existing networks is the distribution of radio and television signals downstream from the headends to the subsciber homes. The networks are frequently built in tree and star structure. Because of the prospective possibilities to utilize the CATV networks for information transfer upstream from the subscriber to the headend and/or to other subscibers, most CATV networks are provided with the capability of supplementary installation of upstream facilities.
