The microstates and the colorability of chromium ions in barium or strontium sulphoaluminate cement were studied by means of XPS and EPMA. The results have shown that chromium ions can make barium or strontium sulphoaluminate minerals assume yellow. The valence distribution of chromium ions has great difference in the different sulphoaluminate minerals. There is a great deal of Cr~(6+), Cr~(5+) as well as Cr~(4+) in the minerals of 3CA ? CaSO_4; Cr~(5+) and Cr~(4+) in 3CA ? BaSO_4; every kind of Cr ion is widely distributed in 3CA ? SrSO_4, in which Cr~(5+) is the most. But these ions produce dismutation reaction in pastes, Cr~(6+) becomes the main coloring ion in the paste of 3CA ? BaSO_4 ,Cr~(3+) in the other two.
