FOCUS: a user-centred approach to expert systems development

The FOCUS approach of determining user requirements during the analysis phase of an expert system life cycle ensures that all relevant human-computer issues are taken into account. The expert system that is subsequently developed should permit users to carry out the tasks that they require via an interface that allows them to do so efficiently and effectively. Initially, a review of the life cycle literature indicated that KADS, a very popular methodology, could be used to determine interaction needs, but further experience proved this not to be the case. Detailed guidelines for the knowledge engineer were lacking. Consequently, the FOCUS methodology was developed to supply the necessary framework. This methodology was used in the analysis phase of an enrolment system for university students.
