Magnetic data storage technology-the first century

It is noted that 1998 will mark the 100th anniversary since the invention of magnetic recording. The technology still indicates there is no end in sight into the further gains that are possible. At the densities being envisaged, a 1.8 in drive could store over a gigabyte of data. The current status of hard disk drives and removable storage (floppy disk drives and magnetic tape) is reviewed, and some future trends are projected.
