The formulation and revision of low voltage design guidelines for Southern Africa

Low voltage distribution network design involves the selection of conductor size and route subject to constraints. These requirements are that the customer receive reliable electrical power within a contracted voltage and demand current range. A further design criterion is that the overall network capital and running costs should be minimal for the particular specifications. This involves a knowledge of the forecasted customer loads as well as a voltage drop calculation algorithm that will give accurate results. In practice, this information is usually obtained from published design guidelines. The formulation and periodic revision of such guidelines pertinent to a developing country, such as South Africa, are considered.
