Experiences on the integrated control and avionics for air superiority (ICAAS) program are used to discuss various methods for validating avionics system performance in the air-to-air mission. Digital air battle simulation proved to be an effective screening tool for identifying first-order mission effectiveness trends. Part task simulations added the human element to the evaluation. Full-mission manned simulations provide the most comprehensive and accurate assessment of the performance of the integrated avionics system in the air-to-air mission. The flight test program is described and justified as a limited but necessary real world validation and demonstration of system performance benefits.
