Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are salient when designed with buried or interior magnets. Salient pole PMSM have shown better torque capability by utilising the reluctance torque, and may have a large flux weakening region when compared to the more common non-salient pole PMSM. A new approach for flux weakening in PMSM drives is presented, and a fast digital vector modulator with look-up tables is described. The control principles are verified by simulations and laboratory tests on a 2.8 kW salient pole PMSM drive.
