The University of Wisconsin's experience as a superconductivity engineering research center since the invention of the superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system is described. The SMES used today consists of a superconductive storage coil charged and discharged by a Graetz bridge. The topics discussed are the following: the electrical use of SMES; configurations; structure and conductor requirements; the status of present SMES design; rippled design; nonrippled design; conductor stability; SMES coil protection systems; and the use of high-temperature superconductors in SMES systems.
