The authors present block-error rates for the transmission of data in a single time slot of a 30 kHz TDMA (time-division multiple-access) channel. As expected, the transmission of 4800 b/s data is more robust than that of 9600 b/s data, due to the increased number of available coding bits. For both cases, the use of proper interleaving will provide a significant increase in performance. At higher data rates, interleaving should be carefully designed since inadequate interleaving may cause a decrease in performance at lower S/N (signal/noise) ratio. For large codes, the gain due to interleaving is more pronounced and occurs over the entire range of S/N. It was assumed that a block-error rate of greater than 10% may result in poor throughput due to repeated retransmission requests. From the results presented for this channel, an interleaving depth of 8 appears to be a good choice for acceptable coding performance and throughput.
