The presence of residual stress may affect the integrity and performance of pressurized components. Because the accurate analysis of residual stress has generally been impossible by purely theoretical procedures, the measurement of residualstress in fabricated components has often been required in order to investigate structural concerns. A description is made of the advanced hole drilling method of residual stress measurement. This method is based on an ultra high speed drilling technique and incorporates an advanced data analysis procedure. A number of case studies are discussed involving the measurement of residual stress by the advanced hole drilling method on various electric power plant pressure components. Included in the casestudies are references to the potential applicability of other residual stress measurement methods.
