Hyperbolic.cooling tower is one of the equipments usually used in fossil-fuel or nuclear power plant. Since the collapes of cooling towers in Ferry-bridge Power Station in 1965, many papers on wind loading of cooling tower have been published, but few are concerned with the visualization of flow around the cooling tower. In this paper some results of flow visualization are presented. Experiment was carried out in the towing water tank of the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Laboratory of the Department of Mechanics, Peking University. The tank is 0.4m wide,0.5m high and 6m long. It is equipped with a motor-driven carriage which, together with cooling tower model placed on a supporting platform and submerged in water, could move at a constant speed. Electrolytic-preciptation method is utilized in this experiment. Powerful slit-lights from the sides of water tank, also attached to the carriage, make the flow visible in the illuminating plane.
