By means of high power pulsed CO_2 laser focused on a point in air the typical shock wave and point source explosion can be obtained to demonstrate the propagation, reflection and diffraction of a shock wave. The high speed interferography and shadowgraphy are used to visualize and record the motion of the shock wave. Some high speed photographs are given in this paper. This method is better than the ordinary chemical and electrical explosion method in that either there is smoke near the explosion center or the wave is not spherical.
