This paper proposes the design of a standalone light emitting diode (LED) photovoltaic street light system for a main road of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The light poles spacing, height, and the boom angle are kept similar to the existing high-pressure sodium vapor (HPS) lighting system. Furthermore, two type of batteries, Lithium ion and the Lead acid are compared for their suitability for the proposed street light system. The size and rating of the photovoltaic (PV) panel and the charge controller are specified while considering the annual solar radiation in the UAE. Finally, the overall cost of the street light system is estimated.
