The Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network is widely viewed as the next generation telecommunications network. It will provide economical high speed intercormectivity for a wide variety of business services, including interfaces between local area networks, access to remote file servers, and desk top multimedia voice/data/video teleconferencing. Furthermore, for residence subscribers, it will provide the capability to integrate video entertainment services with more conventional voice and data services. This paper describes ongoing research at Bell Communications Research on the realizability and the development of interface standards for this network. Specific topics addressed in the paper include basic technologies and potential architectures for the Broadband ISDN. Also addressed are preliminary views on the bit rates and interface structures for the subscriber access.
