PRESENT AND FUTURE OF THE TELEOOM 1 SYSTEM

The French national satellite communication system TELECOM 1 is now operational, with two in- orbit spacecraft, TELECOM 1-A (launched in August 1984) and TELECOM 1-B (launched in may 1985). This system opens an era of new digital services for overseas French lands and European business communities. This paper describes the present status of the system, in terms of architecture, hardware and services. These accomplishments, which were carried out under the technical management of the Centre National d'Etudes des Telecommunications (CNET), have now to be put in the perpective of future developments. On-going activities now undertaken by CNET in this framework are presented in this paper: new satellite and earth station technologies will provide enhanced traffic capability and service quality at lower costs.
