A new class of frequency detectors is presented for carrier recovery in QAM systems. Specific schemes are described for 16 QAM and 64 QAM signal constellations, and their performance is examined, They allow very rapid carrier acquisition over an extended frequency range, and consequently, among other applications, they are of potential interest to digital radio systems where large frequency uncertainties may be encountered between the transmitter and the receiver.
