THE IMPACT OF DIVESTITURE ON 5ESS* SWITCH SOFTWARE

As part of the divestiture of the local Bell Operating Companies (BOCs) from AT&T,the pre-divestiture Bell System telephone network has been divided into a set of local networks (owned and operated by the BOCs) and a long dlstance network (owned and operated by AT&T).Each local network is limited to a single disjoint region known as a Local Access and Transport Area (LATA).The BOCs are allowed to handle only intraLATA traffic;interLATA traffic is made available to all long distance carriers on an equal basis.The long distance carriers are thus known as interLATA carriers (ICs).This paper describes the new requirements imposed on local BOC switching systems by this dramatic change in the national telephone network,and more specifically,the software impact of these requirements on the 5ESS* Switch.
