In CSMA/CD networks,a packet is retransmitted if it collides with other packets. After many unsuccessful attempts for transmission, the packet is dropped. In this paper,an analytic model is proposed to study the effect of maximum retry numbers on the performance ofa CSMA/CD network. From this model, the throughput-offered load characteristics and the drop probability of packet-throughput characteristics can be obtained as a function of maximum retry numbers.Furthermore, given a maximum retry number,we can derive the average retry number of a packet's successful transmission as a function of offered load. This study demonstrates that it is also possible to control the maximum retry number so that the network can achieve better throughput and reduce the drop rate.
